A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
